Arabica coffee may require the same sorting technology or the combination of different technologies (double camera or trichromatic) depending on kind of defects to be removed, on their colors and on cause creating them.The most typical defects are: dark grains, brown grains (clear and dark), mitadine grains, yellowish (amber), spotted, with insect bites or acid green grains (Arabica).
Contamination may change depending on country of origin. These defects damage the products appearance and its organoleptic characteristics, so lowering their commercial value in the international market. Sorting requirements may change depending on country of origin, on final international market and on customer’s particular requirements.
In country of origin, it’s normally required the separation of more evident defects (dark, spotted or mitadine grains) to improve coffee appearance. During that process it’s not required the separation of minor defects, which would cause higher reject quantities. It’s necessary to consider that many batches of coffee are re-sorted again in their final markets of destination.
